An emergency slide that fell from a Delta Air Lines flight just minutes after takeoff on Friday was recovered on Sunday along a jetty in a Queens neighborhood about six miles from Kennedy International Airport, officials said. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation said that Delta Air Lines had recovered “a large piece of debris” from the jetty near Beach 131st Street in Belle Harbor, southwest of the airport. Delta Air Lines said in a statement on Tuesday that it had retrieved the slide from the jetty. It was unclear whether the slide had landed on the jetty, a small rock pier built to break apart waves, or it had washed up there. The crew also noticed a “non-routine” sound from that wing, the airline said.

CNN —If you drink every time someone mentions “Barbie” at this Sunday’s Oscars, you probably won’t be awake to see the best picture category presented, even with the show’s earlier start time. Yet while the year’s biggest box-office winner will get plenty of attention – due in part to its much-debated “snubs” – the 96th Academy Awards looks destined to be “Oppenheimer’s” night. While few superhero or genre movies have managed to break through (“Black Panther” being an exception), “Barbie’s” mix of stars and social commentary nabbed eight nominations, including best picture. The award-industrial complex’s fondness for smaller films, further fueled by their availability via streaming services, is evident in the other best picture contenders. Cillian Murphy accepts the Screen Actors Guild award for his starring role in "Oppenheimer," the heavy favorite on Oscar night.

The first time I saw Naomi Watts playing my grandmother Babe Paley in “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” she was in tears. She had just discovered her husband’s affair with Happy Rockefeller, the governor’s wife, finding him on the bedroom floor, scrubbing a stain of menstrual blood from their plush carpet. Babe summons Truman Capote to her Fifth Avenue apartment, her face set in distress, her mascara running. In his book, Mr. Leamer surmises that the governor’s wife in Capote’s story is Marie Harriman, not Ms. Rockefeller. There are no live recordings of Babe, no way for an actress to know how she moved and spoke.

How Google lost its way

Just two months after Google launched Gemini, its flashy new AI model, the company revealed that it had already built a better version. Users have long bemoaned — and researchers recently found — a decline in the quality of Google Search results. The fact that Google is not far and away the self-driving-car leader, it's, like, a total joke," the former Google director said, adding that the problem of Google's lost supremacy is "maybe impossible to solve, frankly." The research, published in the scientific journal Nature last week, opens up the possibility that graphene, long a subject of scientific study, could be used as an alternative to silicon, the most prevalent material found in chips today.

The National Association for Gun Rights, Robert Bevis and his firearms store, Law Weapons & Supply, made the request after a lower court denied their bid for a preliminary injunction against the ban, as well as a similar ban enacted by another Chicago suburb, Naperville. The plaintiffs also asked the Supreme Court for an injunction at an earlier stage of the case, but were rebuffed in May. The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, has taken an expansive view of the Second Amendment, broadening gun rights in three landmark rulings since 2008. In 2022, the court recognized a constitutional right to carry a handgun in public for self defense, striking down a New York state law.

We related to the mother-daughter dynamic of wanting to murder each other one moment, and cuddling in bed giggling the next. Since we knew the neighborhood Aurora lived in, the affluent River Oaks, we felt a kinship with the characters, as if they existed within our universe. Mostly, we bonded over the film’s message that levity and sorrow can, and should, coexist. The theme is just part of the fabric of the movie, like Aurora’s petal pink décor or Emma’s messiness. Down in the galleries, the Met’s designers have widened the rooms, rearranged the sightlines, shellacked the walls purple and blue. The curators have reassembled the whole painting collection for the first time since 2018, shuffled across 45 new galleries and bathed in beautifully tempered light. (When it comes to light, this New Amsterdam institution definitely leans more Dutch than Italian.) Google and other companies in the generative AI space see an opportunity to win over customers following the turmoil at OpenAI. Google said its sales team launched a campaign to persuade customers to switch from OpenAI. It is matching OpenAI’s pricing, providing cloud credits if customers use its AI software and offering assistance switching to its platform. Amazon said recent events underscore the value of its selected generative AI strategy, whereby customers can choose between many AI systems versus going all-in on OpenAI or a single vendor.

That happens to be the year the Met last put on a Spanish-language opera, and there’s something amusing in the fact that next to nothing in “Florencia,” which premiered in Houston in 1996, would have surprised an audience back then. You almost want to applaud the impressive, if perverse, achievement of a score that so thoroughly rejects all the galvanic musical developments since the early 1900s, when the opera is set. The action — hardly complex, but crowded — takes place aboard a steamboat in the Amazon rainforest. The passengers are on their way to hear the great diva Florencia Grimaldi sing at the Belle Époque opera house in Manaus, Brazil. There’s a swooning pair of young lovers, and a bickering married couple; a would-be Grimaldi biographer and a mystical narrator; oh, and Florencia, too, somehow unrecognized by everyone else and returning to Manaus in search of her lover, a butterfly hunter she lost long ago.
